My name is Meirion Smith, I am the owner of Octave Doctor. I provide guitar repair services to the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. Originally from Wales, I immigrated to the U.S. to be with my wife, Amanda, who is American. We don’t have any kids yet, but we do have dogs who keep us on our toes and laughing. Octave Doctor is a one-man sole proprietorship. However, when she’s well enough, you might see my wife helping out around the office or answering the phone.
I started playing on my brother’s guitar when I was about 5 or 6 years old, and I had my first guitar at age 11. I started doing my own set-ups when I was about 14, and began doing my own modifications and alterations in my 30’s. About 10 years ago my friends started taking notice and began asking my advice and help with their set-ups, modifications, and alterations. In addition to my many years of experience as a musician and working on guitars, I am a certified electrician in the U.K. and have an extensive background in electrical and mechanical engineering.
My immigration to the U.S. provided me a unique opportunity to begin a new career and I decided I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I believe that every instrument has the potential to be great and make beautiful music, sometimes they just need a little extra care and attention. Octave Doctor is here to provide for the needs of your guitar, and your guitar will be cared for as if it were my own. I don’t just repair guitars. Any fretted instrument acoustic or electric, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar, 12-string guitar, everything but the kitchen sink.
My mission is to help fellow musicians keep their music alive through the repair, modification, or alteration of their fretted instrument by providing superior repair services and personalized customer service. I am committed to ongoing training and education, and I want to help educate my customers on the best care and maintenance for their instrument. All guitars need to be optimized for best playability, tone and enjoyment. I service instruments for all levels of musician, so whether you’re a beginner or a professional, I would love to help repair or restore your instrument. I provide services from string changes and set-ups to fret replacement and guitar electronics (full amplifier repair services will be coming in the future), check out our services page for more details.
